Plum Blossom

This method draws no lots and needs no coins. It reads the moment you ask in — the lunar year, month, day and two-hour block — and turns those numbers into a hexagram, a hidden hexagram, and one moving line. Everything runs in your browser.

How to cast

Uses the lunar year, month, day and the two-hour block right now, worked out from your own clock.

Your own wall clock, not Beijing time.

You and the matter

The part that decides the verdict

The hexagram is two trigrams. The one without the moving line is called the body (体) and is read as you. The one holding the moving line is the use (用) and is read as the matter you asked about.

Each trigram carries one of the five elements, and the whole judgement rests on how those two elements stand to each other. There are only five possible relations, and they are worth learning once because they never change:

The matter supports you
Its element feeds yours. Help arrives unasked, and the situation itself works for you. The most favourable of the five.
You and the matter agree
Both trigrams share an element. No friction: what you want and what the situation wants are the same thing.
You can master the matter
Your element controls its element. The advantage is real but has to be used — this is won by effort, not luck.
The matter drains you
Your element feeds its element. You put in more than you get back, and the effort strengthens the situation rather than you.
The matter overpowers you
Its element controls yours. The situation is stronger than your position in it. Withdraw or change the terms.
